Dr. Justin Koo , a lecturer in Law at the Faculty of Law, UWI, St Augustine , explains what is an illegal streaming device and the different ways that copyright infringement can arise with these devices.
Dr. Koo specialises in intellectual property, sports, and entertainment law. He has a LLB from the University of Kent, LLM in Intellectual Property Law from King’s College, London, as well as, a PhD from King’s College. His primary area of research is copyright law.
The Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (TATT is currently collaborating with the Trinidad and Tobago Intellectual Property Office (TTIPO) to educate the public about the consequences of breaching the Copyright Act of Trinidad and Tobago, Chap 82:80.
That portion of the act states the following:
“Any person who in the course of a business, imports, sells or advertises for sale these illegal streaming devices, whether online, in-store or otherwise”, should cease doing so with immediate effect.
This offence carries a maximum fine of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars ($250,000.00) and imprisonment for ten (10) years.
